Carolyn is a talented director with a striking and inimitable visual style in both commercials and music videos, and has over 10 years of directing experience. Characterised by meticulous art direction and styling, combined with a gift for getting great performances, her work to date has set a benchmark for fresh and innovative advertising, and it is obvious that Carolyn’s brand of fabulously slick and stylish directing work owes a lot to her fashion and style background.
Carolyn has always been a fashion aficionado with a unique sense of style that influences everything in her life. She has been designing and making her own clothes since the age of seven, and has an incredible eye for colour and detail. Initially studying embroidery and textiles at Goldsmiths College and then subsequently at London’s prestigious Royal College of Art she developed an entirely original embroidery technique (later used to create the stunning dress in her commercial for Gordon’s Gin.)
On leaving the Royal College of Art she formed a hugely successful creative partnership called The New Renaissance with fellow graduate Harvey Bertram-Brown. Together they designed window schemes for Harvey Nichols and Liberty, created the celebrated Powergen Weather Idents, designed their own fashion and home textiles lines, and Carolyn also created the stunning interiors of her own home (which you can see featured in ‘London Interiors’ by Thames& Hudson.) In addition they began to style and art-direct for commercials and music videos and it was simply a matter of time before advertising agencies and pop stars were demanding that they apply their extraordinary visual flair to directing commercials and videos for them.
Since then there has been no stopping her! Firstly with–Gordon’s Gin for Leo Burnett – ( their directing debut) Carolyn demonstrated a considerable understanding of post production and this expertise has continued to grow, along with her unique aesthetic. Within their first year of directing Carolyn and Harvey received the accolade of being selected for the celebrated Saatchi & Saatchi new director’s Showcase at Cannes.
Carolyn has always been a perfectionist and an innovator and is passionate about film making. In both commercials and music videos her goal is excellence and she makes every frame and every detail within the frame really count. She loves a technical challenge and continues to experiment with different in-camera, editing and post production techniques that will add that extra magic to a finished film.
Although a busy and successful director of music videos and commercials Carolyn’s ambition is to direct films. To this end she has been developing a number of short and long form projects.
Intelligent and thoughtful, Carolyn’s work in both commercials and promos has shown her considerable ability to create unique and fascinating worlds that are mesmerising, beautiful, visually rich and stylish. It is these qualities that she wants to bring to her narrative film work along with her ability to tell a story concisely and economically.
Carolyn’s client list includes Saatchi & Saatchi, Leo Burnett, Grey Worldwide, Wieden & Kennedy, Publicis and the BBC for commercials and idents, as well as George Michael, Elton John, Leanne Rimes, Girls Aloud, Emma Bunton, Bryan Ferry, Shirley Bassey and Siouxsie Sioux for music videos.
